New Eee PC SSD

About 6 months ago I recieved the Asus 901 Eee PC as a gift. I must say I love the little netbook. I’m constantly using around the house and for work. I got the 901 with XP and not Linux. The specs on the machine are:

8.9′ inch screen

12GB SSD

WiFi b/g/n

bluetooth

Intel Atom

1GB ram

One of my little grips about the machine was that it only had 12GB of storage space. The SSD’s in the netbook make it boot really fast plus it saves on battery life. It just doesn’t give you the room to really save anything on it. So, just recently I purchased a Super Talent 64GB SSD (FPM64GLSE) so I could have the storage space to save stuff on my netbook. Before I placed the new SSD in my netbook I ran some read and write speed tests on it just to see if their were any performance gains.

To test the SSD speeds before and after, I used CrystalDiskMark. The program tests Read/Write in sequence, in 512k, and 4K. Here are the benchmarks before:

Here are the marks After I replaced the factory SSD with the Super Talent SSD:

As you can see the read/write performace is much fast with the new Super Talent SSD. I have to say the netbook is so much more snappier.  Copying files and loading applications are much faster. I also tried out hebrnation on the netbook and wow does it work fast. It works just as fast as stand by mode. If you have some cash to spend and want more space, check out what Super Talent or Runcore to upgrade your SSD for your netbook.

DRM Free Your Music With Tunebite

Ever purchase DRM music from Walmart, Yahoo, MSN, Rhapsody, or Napster music store? Ever tried to transfer those songs to your new mp3 player or burn those songs to disc because you thought you actually own the music you bought? Then you have probably faced the same problems I have run into with DRM music. Most recently, more and more stores are getting rid of their DRM collection and going DRM free. Their is still a chance you could run into DRM music which leads me to my topic for the day, “DRM Free Your Music.”

What is DRM? DRM stands for Digital Rights Management. This is one way the Recording Industry is trying to control the digital music downloads that you legally purchures from music stores like Napster, Walmart, Yahoo, etc. So how does it work? well, think of it as like a lock and key. The song DRM song is usually locked down when you download it. The only way to play that song is to play the song with the one specific PC or specific mp3 player (which is the key). If you would like to play the song with any other device you may have to buy an addition copy of the song or ask the music store for some sort of reset tool that will allow you to play the track on another device. Seems kind of like a big hassle for something which you rightful paid for, right? Is their a way to remove DRM? The anwser is kind of yes and no. In reality you can’t remove the DRM code within the song itself, but you can re-record the song to another audio file format without DRM. One of the best programs for the job is Tunebite.

top-logoTunebite is a program you can purchase to help remove the DRM from you music collection. Tunebite has other features like audio conversion, music tagging, and others. The best features is the DRM removal function. How does it work? Tunebite in simple terms, just re-records the audio feed from the DRM music file to a new music file without the DRM. Wait, so that means it will take the length of the song to make a new none DRM free song right? Wrong! Tunebite has a feature that re-records the song at a much faster rate. So you wont have to wait 4-5 miniutes for a song to be re-recorded. Also if you specify a folder where most of you DRM music is it will keep try of the ones that have been re-recorded and ones that have not been. It will also do re-records of other songs at the sametime. Not only does it re-record a song at a fast rate but it can do other  re-records of other songs at the sametime. Based on my personal experience I have had as many as 5 songs being re-recorded at the sametime. But what about the audio quality of the new song DRM free song you just made. Tunebite does such a great job at the re-record, you can’t tell the difference. For the 6 months I have been using the program I have yet to run into a song I re-recorded that sounded different from the original.

What does this mean to you with this new DRM free music of yours. It means you can play it on anything you want to. You can play it on you new mp3 player you bought, your wifes laptop, burn a copy to play in your car stereo, or let a friend borrow it. So now it actually seems like you own the song you paid for. If you have ever run into DRM music problems, take it from me and try out Tunebite.

Twitter, Is Anyone Listening To Me???

Social Networking, what is it with us and being connected with each other. What is it about us that feels the need to keep in contact with old high school friends. We started with Myspace and then moved on to Facebook. Now Facebook just isn’t enough so now we turn to Twitter. Sure Twitter doesn’t have all the extras like Facebook and Myspace but that is what makes Twitter, Twitter. Twitter is the lazy mans blog which you can only post (tweet) short messages (140 characters to be exact). On Twitter you can post all of the thoughts you are thinking. Yes, that can be anything so let you imagination go wild. Their is a lot of stuff users post that can be really annoying because people just feel the need to post constantly, and some that post rarely. I have found Twitter to be very use to spread news articles to others. I can go and name a few others but I don’t have the energy to go any deeper. Is Twitter cool? Yes and No.. Are people who tweet, the ones that have no friends in the real world? Yes and No… Does Twitter have its place in the Social Networking space? Definitely!! I say give it a shot, its free. Plus you never know what kind of stuff you going to see or read on Twitter. Best of all its Social Networking.. I mean the term Social Networking is cool so that must mean Twitter is cool.. Just as an added bonus, its always fun to laugh at Twitter. enjoy the video (thanks to @excid3).

Bill Gates Wife Loves Apple

If your the wife or kids of the famous billionaire Bill Gates, your not allowed Apple products. I mean come on, Microsoft has a lot of cool stuff like Windows Movie Maker, Songsmith, Windows Defender, I mean the list will go on and on. Ok, I was just joking. Microsoft could use a little work when it comes to the hip and cool stuff these days. Do you think Steve Jobs would allow his family members to have Microsoft Products? It’s funny to think what it would be like if Bill Gates wife did have an Apple product. Thanks to the people over at Funny or Die for the great clip of Melinda Gates keeping here love for Apple products under the table. Ok, I know, the video isn’t really Melinda Gates but its funny to pretend.
